Which are the most common procedures for transporting, loading and unloading demolition carriers?

Demolition carriers, as most machinery, are likely to be moved around frequently in order to operate in different jobsites. In this regard, transportation from site to site should always be
managed following good technical specifications so that all operations are carried out safely.

The specific procedures for transporting, loading and unloading the demolition carriers will vary depending on various factors, especially the type of carrier to transport. However, there are some general rules that should be always taking into account:

  • All components and assemblies must be securely anchored to the vehicle used for the transportation, in order to avoids any movement of the load such transportation.
  • Appropriate cranes and lifting systems, as well as slinging points specified by the manufacturer in the owner’s use and maintenance manual, should be used, in order to perform manoeuvres
correctly estimating adequate safety margins, preventing this way rollovers or instability of the load.
  • It is forbidden to perform any rotation manoeuvres on the transport platform, in order to avoid unbalancing the machine, reducing this way the risk of rollover.

Furthermore, in some cases, due to the big dimensions of the machine, it cannot be transported fully assembled, but can be further disassembled in order to transport the carrier in various sections, usually two or three. In high-reach machines, for example, it is very common to do the transportation separating the machine in the following parts: base Machine, demolition arm,
and tools and counterweights (if requested).

When the transportation is done this way the dismantling and reassembly phase of the carrier is usually underestimated, but experience shows that a previous planned procedure of this phase will improve the safety conditions. The elements to be considered during the planning process are: the morphology of the ground, the space available to operate.
