DEVELON, an EDA member, is integrating intelligent detection and intervention systems into its Series 9 excavators to help prevent accidents involving pedestrians while maintaining productivity on construction sites.
As construction sites become more complex, operators face increasing challenges in monitoring people, equipment and obstacles around their machines. Limited visibility, changing site conditions and human error can all contribute to accidents, particularly when excavators work close to ground personnel.
From detection to intervention
DEVELON’s Series 9 excavators combine camera technology, artificial intelligence and radar to improve operator awareness. Six high-definition cameras provide an all-round view of the machine, while software identifies people in the surrounding area. Three radar sensors measure distances across 330 degrees, helping cover key blind spots.
The company’s E-Stop system takes this approach further by introducing active intervention when a hazard reaches a defined threshold. Available as an option on Series 9 crawler excavators, the system is designed to provide an additional layer of protection without replacing operator judgement or existing site safety procedures.
DEVELON has also made its Smart All-Around View Monitoring system, which includes people recognition, standard on its Series 9 excavators.
Maintaining productivity on site
The effectiveness of safety technology depends not only on its detection capabilities but also on how it performs during everyday operations. Frequent false alerts or unnecessary stops can disrupt workflows and affect operator acceptance.
During trials with contractors and operators in France, DEVELON received positive feedback on the E-Stop system’s integration into normal working routines. According to Dieu, operators reported that the system did not interfere with their work while providing additional reassurance.
Beyond protecting workers, preventing serious accidents can also help contractors avoid project interruptions, equipment damage, investigations and increased insurance costs. Safety performance is becoming an increasingly important consideration for businesses managing complex construction projects.
Dieu expects anti-collision systems to become a standard jobsite requirement within the next five to ten years, driven initially by large contractors and rental companies.
Although technology cannot eliminate every risk, DEVELON’s approach illustrates how intelligent detection and intervention can support existing safety measures while helping operators work with greater awareness and confidence.
