LEKATECH’s Leka Toras 35 electric hammer is moving from development into real-world construction applications, with its first production units now being used on customer sites. One example is a project in Haaga, Helsinki, where SSA Rakennus Oy is transforming an old primary school into a residential development.
The project combines renovation, demolition and bedrock excavation, all taking place in a densely built residential area. With neighbouring properties and a daycare centre close to the site, controlling noise and vibration was an important consideration. SSA Rakennus therefore chose the Finnish-made Leka Toras 35 as part of its approach to efficient and sustainable construction.
Developed by LEKATECH since 2016 and now part of the Normet Group, the electric hammer uses electrical power from an excavator or the grid to deliver controlled impacts. According to LEKATECH, it can achieve up to 75% greater energy efficiency than a hydraulic breaker, while consuming electricity only when an impact is delivered. It also produces no local emissions and generates less noise and vibration.
A key feature is the precise control provided by its electric linear motor. Impact frequency can be adjusted from 60 to 900 blows per minute, while impact energy ranges from 300 to 1,500 joules. The 18-kW hammer weighs around 500 kg and is designed for 7–16-tonne excavators.
The results in Helsinki have been particularly positive. SSA Rakennus site supervisor Arttu Manni noted that the hammer was quieter and had not caused vibrations in neighbouring buildings. “There is a daycare centre right next to the site, as well as many residents. We have not received any complaints, however,” he said.
Following the demolition work, the hammer was also tested on granite, where its power and relatively low noise level proved effective.
For SSA Rakennus, the experience has reinforced the potential of electric breaking technology. “We have a very positive impression of this hammer. We could certainly see ourselves using one on the next project as well,” Manni concluded.
