New technologies help tackle heat risks in demolition and construction

As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, protecting workers from heat stress is becoming a growing priority for the demolition and construction sectors. A recent report from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work highlights how digital technologies and innovative cooling solutions can strengthen occupational safety when combined with effective prevention measures.

Among the most promising solutions are wearable devices that monitor workers’ body temperature, smartphone apps that provide real-time heat alerts and hydration reminders, and ventilated protective clothing that helps reduce heat exposure.

The report emphasises that these technologies should complement, but not replace, good safety practices such as adequate hydration, work-rest cycles, shaded rest areas, task scheduling during cooler hours and proper training.

For the demolition industry, integrating innovation with robust health and safety planning will be essential to protecting workers as extreme weather becomes an increasingly common challenge.
