Carcinogens in Construction and Demolition

16/04/2017

This topic will be presented by Stephen Schindler, Policy adviser at Current European Federation of Building and Wood Workers, EFBWW, and will take place at workshop room on Thursday 15, June, at 16:00.

EU policy initiatives establishing ambitious targets to improve the energy performance of buildings prompt urgent measures to protect workers and inhabitants from exposure to carcinogenic substances in buildings.

Considering that this type of renovation work typically involves parts of a building where such substances can be found it is important to rethink the way we protect construction workers.

The EU needs a holistic policy mix that includes proactive removal plans, preventive detection and differentiated training that covers different categories of workers, from professional decontamination companies to those who may unknowingly encounter harmful substances such as asbestos during the course of maintenance, renovation or demolition.
