Construction and demolition waste management in the EU: the way forward
31/03/2014
The European Commission will be at the Deconstruction Forum to introduce the situation of CDW management in the EU to all the participants.
Construction and demolition waste (CDW) represents a significant fraction of the waste generated in the European Union (approximately 30%, according to estimates).
This represents not only a significant waste stream, but – to date – a largely unexploited resource.
The European Commission considers that it is time to assess in-depth the situation in all the Member States and to identify the key elements or framework conditions that have allowed some Member States to establish systems where CDW is largely exploited as a resource and not just dumped in landfills.
In 2014, the Commission will launch a study aimed at identifying best practices and the necessary framework conditions that were created in the most performing countries, as well as the obstacles that have to be surmounted in those countries where a resource efficient use of CDW is in its infancy.
The speaker of these presentation at the Deconstruction Forum, will be Gunther Wolff, currenty a member of the Sustainable Production and Consumption at the European Commission DG for the Environment.
The Deconstruction Forum will be held in Madrid (Spain) on June 12th to 14th, 2014.
