Housing and new built solutions: Call for action from Construction 2050 Alliance

  • EDA, being part of the Construction 2050 Alliance, with the Urban Intergroup, addressed Europe’s housing crisis. Despite its vital role in the EU’s economy and sustainability goals, the construction sector faces declining demand.

With over 5 million companies and 25 million employees, the European construction industry contributes significantly to the EU’s GDP. However, it faces a decline in demand despite its crucial role in the green, competitive, and inclusive transition of the built environment.

On December 13th, the Construction 2050 Alliance released a call and commitment for the new European Union political term, emphasizing the industry’s importance to the people-economy-climate triangle.

As a first step, the Alliance proposes establishing an annual High-Level Summit for the Built Environment, beginning in early 2024. This initiative aims to mobilize all relevant actors and ensure the construction industry’s essential contribution to the EU’s environmental, social, and economic goals is recognized and supported.

Member States are grappling with severe housing shortages, with housebuilding declining across the EU. The construction ecosystem is dedicated to promoting solutions for providing quality, affordable, and sustainable homes for all citizens, but challenges remain in meeting environmental objectives.
