The purpose behind the Guide about Urban Regeneration
1/07/2025
Increasing demographic pressure, climate urgency, and social transformation demand an urgent solution from society, which must rethink how to reuse, reshape, and revive urban spaces. With that in mind, the EDA Working Group on Urban Regeneration was created to share knowledge and develop the Guide about Urban Regeneration and Demolition Footprint, which has been recently launched.
This guide shows that demolition is a strategic tool within urban regeneration that creates the opportunity to reduce embodied carbon, recover valuable materials to be reused/recycled, and enhance the social and environmental fabric of our cities.
Inside the publication
It is widely known in the industry that with the increasing need to revitalise urban areas and create spaces that are more resilient, efficient, and better suited to the needs of communities, it is important to reconsider demolition as a means to achieve these goals.
Ms Anaïs Terbeche, on behalf of the French association SEDDre, was the Coordinator of the guide. She points out: “Demolition, often misunderstood or undervalued, is not a barrier to sustainability. Demolition is a key enabler and part of the solution.” Also, she established: “In a time when our cities are facing increasing demographic pressure, climate urgency, and social transformation, we must rethink how to reuse, reshape, and revive urban spaces.”
