What is a quick coupler?

A quick coupler is an adaptation system that allows to change various different attachments on the same carrier and to use the same attachment for different carriers.
The system consists of two main components:
- The quick coupler mounted on the arm/stick
- The adapter plate mounted on the attachment
As long as these two parts are made to the same dimensions, it is possible to change attachments without a problem. In this regard, it is worth mentioning that there is a wide variety of different types. Some coupler systems are designed by a certain machine manufacturer or by an independent quick coupler manufacturer. It is essential to consider this when purchasing an attachment or carrier, to ensure that they are compatible with each other and with other attachments or carriers already owned.
On this matter, in the European market today, there are different types of quick couplers used in the demolition and recycling industry which offers different type of features and benefits.
Quick couplers are most common on excavators, on demolition robots, and on the backhoe equipment of backhoe loaders but are also installed on telescopic handlers, wheel loaders, skid-steer loaders, and the loader equipment of backhoe-loaders.
However, this guide focuses on quick couplers installed on excavators and similar equipment. Although the main principles apply to loaders and other carriers as well.
