What good operative procedures should be followed when performing recycling tasks on demolition works?

With regard to good operative procedures when carrying out on-site recycling operations, a distinction must be made between those concerning the recycling itself and those involving the use of specific equipment. All of them are listed in the following table:

GOOD OPERATIVE PROCEDURES

Recycling tasks

  • Sort different waste materials
  • Use deposit spots in appropriate sizes to facilitate waste segregation and locate these spots close to working areas
  • Clearly label deposit spots on-site to promote effective segregation
  • Labels should contain images or materials icons
  • Train operators on practical ways to manage and handle materials to maximise their recycling potential.
  • Keep hazardous wastes out of mixed waste skips.
  • Implement good housekeeping throughout the site to promote good waste segregation and reuse opportunities.
  • Specify the materials that can be recycled on-site.
  • Keep materials for recycling clean, dry and separate from other materials or waste.

Use of recycling equipment

  • Establish exclusion zones.
  • Only allow trained and experienced personnel to manage the recycling equipment.
  • Use support personnel when necessary.
  • Plan in advance the replacement of attachments and maintenance operations on-site and ensure they are being carried out safely.
  • Minimise dust emissions.
  • Storage correctly all the equipment after the working shift.
