Which is the selection criteria of the ensemble machine-attachment?

Demolition and recycling attachments must be used in combination with a carrier. But not every attachment fit with every carrier.

When an attachment is needed for a work it is very important to select the appropriate carrier for it. This selection will depend on various factors:

  • Both, carrier and attachment, must have their corresponding required documents according to the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (for example, CE declaration of conformity or instruction manual).
  • Depending on the country, they must comply with further regulations.
  • The instruction manual of the carrier must allow its assembly with the chosen attachment. Additionally, it must have, in a very detailed way, all the needed information to assemble and use the machine, safely, with all the attachment types permitted.
  • The instruction manual of the attachment must allow its use and assembly with the selected carrier.
  • The machine should have all the protective structures required for demolition works: TOPS, ROPS and FOPS.
  • Both, carrier and attachment should be in perfect condition, without presenting any damages or malfunctions.

How should the attachments be transported?

The transportation of demolition and recycling attachments to the job site where they are going to be used is usually done by road transport. However, within this type of transport, the is a wide
variety of transport modes to choose from.

In any case, the drivers transporting the attachments must be trained and competent to deliver them with the machine by a dedicated low loader for the larger types and/or beaver tail (or similar) for the smaller machines.

Delivery of the attachments via the back of a waste container is not recommended, as access into the container is likely to be difficult, the container can be classed as a confined space and if there is a mishap or instability in the attachment, there is the risk of trapping and serious injury.

Regarding attachment transportation inside the job site, it must be pointed out that it should be avoided the use of chains or straps to move the attachments, as there exists a risk of damage to the equipment or injury to persons if there is a failure in the lifting equipment or a sudden movement of the machine and/or attachment during tracking. In this context, attachments should only be carried out when fully attached and coupled to the machine ready for work.
