EDA involved in the End-of-Waste criteria
28/11/2024
The European Demolition Association is involved with the European Comission’s initiative that aims to define the End-of-waste criteria for mineral construction and demolition waste. For this matter, EDA, as one of the key stakeholders that have been invited to participate in the process and workshops. This matter, vital to the industry, not only will lead the legislation, but also the enviromental future.
EDA has been collaborating for several months, with workshops organized specifically for this purpose by the association with DG-GROW, DG-ENVIROMENT and the Join Research Center (JRC), European Commission bodies. In this workshop, they started with the identification of ten different materials and about this topic, a survey has been provided, with the aim of giving feedback to the European Comission with an overview of the industry, enriched with the skateholder’s perspectives. It will be distributed at the end of the month, in order to to enable the Commission to prepare a technical proposal by June 2026 that could be converted to legislation by 2027.
Furthermore, given that waste management legislation differs among EU member states, EDA has been holding meetings with national associations to discuss these criteria and their perspectives. Some countries have stronger policies in terms of recycling or even public initiatives to encourage the mandatory use of a minimum percentage of secondary raw materials in public procurement procedures, while others continue to allow landfills. Stay tuned about this topic in the EU Construction and Demolition Waste Managment Protocol.
